We recommend some experience, but no worries; our expert instructors will guide you, helping you create beautiful pottery and build confidence.

  1. The wheel-throwing pottery class begins with an introduction.
  2. Each participant will receive clay, a wheel, and tools.
  3. There will be step-by-step demonstrations and guidance on various techniques and hand-building skills.
  4. Participants will also learn how to clean the pottery wheel properly.
  5. At the end of the class, you can take home your raw ceramic creations or choose to have them bisque-fired and glazed, which we strongly recommend. It would cost an additional $10, while glazing and firing your pottery costs $35.

Our mug-making pottery and ceramic classes are typically 90 minutes long, but class lengths can vary, usually from 1.5 to 2 hours. Please add an additional 15 to 20 minutes if you want to participate in the glazing activity after the session.

It takes approximately 2 to 3 weeks to complete the firing process.

Clay comes off easily. We suggest you wear comfortable clothes you don’t mind getting dirty, and tie back long hair.

Our bisque and glazing activity is a fantastic opportunity to elevate your artistic journey! While it’s not included in your initial purchase, you have the option to take home your raw creation or transform it further with our professional glazing and bisque-firing services. For just $10, your piece can undergo bisque firing, and for an additional $30, we’ll glaze and fire it to perfection. Don’t miss out on the chance to turn your artwork into a lasting treasure!

Mug making vs. a Bowl throwing on Potter’s wheel

We recommend starting with a 90-minute pottery session before jumping into mug-making, as creating mugs on the potter’s wheel can be more challenging than making bowls. Here are several reasons why mug-making is more difficult than bowl-making:

1. Shape Precision: Mugs typically have vertical walls and a uniform cylindrical shape, which requires a higher level of precision during the throwing process. Achieving consistent thickness and shape can be more demanding than the wider, more forgiving curves of a bowl.

2. Handle Attachment: One of the main challenges in mug-making is attaching the handle. Creating a functional handle involves additional techniques, such as pulling and shaping a separate piece of clay. The handle must not only adhere securely to the mug but also support its weight, adding complexity to the process.

3. Structural Integrity: Mugs require thicker walls compared to bowls for strength and durability, especially since they are frequently handled and used for drinking. This requirement necessitates careful consideration during the throwing phase to ensure that the walls are both sturdy and aesthetically pleasing.

4. Balance and Centering: While centering is important for both bowls and mugs, it can differ in approach. Mugs often require extra focus on creating a stable base that can support the weight of the mug when it is full, which can be tricky to achieve.

5. Finishing Touches: Mugs typically necessitate more attention during the finishing process, especially around the handle area. Ensuring that the handle is comfortable to hold while securely attached demands extra care and skill.

Overall, although both bowls and mugs are created using similar foundational techniques, the specific design and functional requirements of mugs introduce additional challenges that can make them more difficult to develop.
